PXT 401 - Puyallup Extrication Team, 4 hour class, DPSST certified

Due to the ever changing technolgies in the automotive field, Hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles have become common place on our roads. These pose new risks and require new approach procedures for Firefighters and first responders. This up-to-date training course provided by PXT and MGS TECH offers discussions about Hybrid parts locations, high voltage hazsrds, poser down procedures, fire and submersion tactics and will dispel myths and misinformation about these vehicles. The course goes into depth on Airbag (SRS) systems and alternative fuel vehicleds. In addition to the class room protion, attendees have the opportunity to put their newly learned knowledge to use by performing power down procedures and practicing other tactics on a live Hybrid vehicle. The course is a must for keeping first responders abreast of changes involving response procedures for Hybrids and Alternative Fuel vehicles.

"Leadership Styles of the Generals of Gettysburg" -  John Mack, Interim Executive Dean of Career and Technical Education, Chemeketa Community College

The purpose of this presentation is to look at some of the leadership styles and decisions made of generals who served at Gettysburg.  At the conclusion of the presentation the participant should be able to apply these lessons learned to their modern day organization, discuss leadership styles and their importance of leading an organization, and finally apply concepts to help you adapt, be innovative and overcome adversity.

About John Mack : John started his fire service career in 1979 with Scotts Mills Rural Fire Department. After graduating from Chemeketa Community College's Fire Science Program in 1987, he was hired by Thurston County Fire District No. 9 in Olympia, WA, where he worked for 8 1/2 years earning the rank of Deputy Fire Chief. In 1995, he left the fire district to become a Fire Science Instructor at Chemeketa Community College.  In 2001, he was promoted as Dean of the Emergency Services Department, were he served 10 years before being appointed in September 2011, as interim Executive Dean of Career and Technical Education.  John has served on several State, National and International Emergency Services Boards.

Friday, May 18th

Home Safety Checks –10:00 – 11:00 am (Class size is limited to 80)

Class Fee: FREE
To conduct home safety check is a unique approach to reducing fire numbers, fire deaths, and injuries occurring in the home. Resources for training Fire personnel and Fire Crops members to implement a successful home safety check program will be provided. Insight into proven home safety programs will be examined as a way to change behaviors in the home, where people are most at risk for fire death and injury. The workshop will look at lessons learned, case studies of successful programs, and the future for home safety checks.

 Engaging Youth Volunteers - 10:00 – 11:00 am (Class size 40)

Class Fee: FREE
This workshop looks at how departments can tap into the youth movement as a resource and discusses best practices for recruiting and retaining teens in fire and emergency management programs. Learn how actual teens are working within the fire department to deliver fire safety and prevention education to their peers and community as well as conducting fundraising initiatives.

FC 100- Introduction to Fire Corps - 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Class size 40)

Class Fee: FREE

FC-100 is designed for fire chiefs, department personnel, municipal officials, and other interested parties who want to learn about the fundamentals of Fire Corps. The session provides an overview of how the Fire Corps program is organized and introduces the benefits, depth, and scope of community volunteer activities in fire and emergency service departments. FC-100 also identifies the basic steps and components to building the infrastructure of a local Fire Corps program.

FC 202- Finding Funding and Support - Saturday, May 19th - 12:00 – 1:00 pm (Class size 40)

Class Fee: FREE
This workshop provides an overview of how funding and support can benefit, strengthen, and increase the scope of fire and emergency service departments as well as the communities in which they serve by creating financial stability.  It will identify the basic steps and components to building a financial plan. The Workshop will cover which funding streams are available and which are right for your organization.   It will cover some basic guidelines to determining your financial needs and resource. It will look at what resources are already available to your department.  In addition, it will discuss tips to acquiring funding and the benefits to gaining a 501c3 tax Exempt status.
